The growing popularity of shuffleboard has led to a wide range of tables entering the market. Buyers today can find tables ranging from entry-level models sold through large online marketplaces to handcrafted domestic tables built by specialty manufacturers.
Understanding the differences in materials, construction methods, and finishing systems can help buyers evaluate long-term value beyond the initial price.
One example of an entry-level shuffleboard table commonly sold through online marketplaces includes the following specifications:

While the visual design may appear similar, differences become clearer when examining materials and construction methods
While some shuffleboard tables may appear visually similar, meaningful differences often emerge when examining playboard thickness, finish systems, cabinet construction, sizing flexibility, and customization options.
Some manufacturers advertise a “3-inch” playboard that includes both the wood thickness and an additional finish layer. In many cases, this may consist of approximately 2 3/4″ of wood with a 1/4″ poured coating applied on top.
Buyers should clarify whether the advertised thickness reflects:
• Full solid wood thickness
or
• Wood thickness plus finish layer
McClure Tables uses full-thickness North American hard maple playboards, measuring a true 3″ of solid hardwood on regulation models, without including finish thickness in the measurement.
Wood species can also vary by manufacturer and model tier. Some tables use hard maple, while others may use alternative hardwood species depending on cost and availability.
Shuffleboard playfields are protected using several common finish systems:
• Poured polymer coatings
• Multi-layer lacquer finishes
• Polyester (piano-style) finishes
A poured polymer system involves applying a thick epoxy-style layer over the wood surface. Lacquer systems are sprayed in multiple layers and built up over time. Polyester finishes are applied under controlled conditions and cured to ensure durability.
Each approach differs in thickness, repairability, long-term wear characteristics, and warranty coverage.
McClure Tables uses a piano-style polyester finish and provides lifetime warranty coverage on its playfields.
Exterior designs may look similar, but cabinet construction methods often differ.
Some tables use engineered core materials, such as particleboard or veneer-over-core construction. Others use solid hardwood structural framing.
Material selection impacts weight, durability, sanding time, and long-term structural stability.
McClure Tables constructs cabinets, legs, and structural components from solid hardwood, matching the material quality used in its playboards.
Mass-produced tables are often offered in a limited range of standard lengths.
Handcrafted manufacturers may offer broader size flexibility, including extended regulation lengths beyond 16 feet.
Buyers should confirm whether the desired size is in the standard production lineup or requires custom fabrication.
Entry-level and factory-produced models are typically offered in fixed configurations with limited stain and finish selections.
Handcrafted manufacturers may offer expanded customization options, including:
• Wood species selection
• Finish color options
• Lighting packages
• Scoreboard configurations
• Custom logo inlays
Customization flexibility can influence both pricing and lead time.
Some buyers begin their search with entry-level or mass-produced tables before later upgrading.
For example, one McClure Tables customer initially purchased a lower-priced imported model through a large online marketplace. After experiencing performance and structural issues, he returned the table and ultimately invested in a domestically handcrafted model that better aligned with his expectations.
Customer feedback from those transitioning from entry-level to handcrafted tables often highlights differences in play consistency, structural stability, and overall finish quality.

We received a phone call one day from a customer named Kevin about purchasing climate adjusters for a shuffleboard table he had purchased on Amazon from a company in China. From his descriptions, he was having serious issues with a crooked second table playboard, to which we had to inform him that climate adjusters just won’t fix, unfortunately. We suggested that he returned the table if he could and seek a replacement from the manufacturer. Thanks to the great customer service Amazon offers, they promptly covered the costs to return the table and Kevin received a replacement shuffleboard. To his surprise, he had further issues with this new replacement and Kevin made the decision to send us a follow-up email to inquire about purchasing a McClure shuffleboard table.
You probably don’t remember me but we spoke on the phone not too long ago. Since we had nenver even seen a shuffleboard table we thought we’d start small (read: cheap) to make sre we like the sport. We found that we love it but we got stuck with an interior Chinese table. They sent us a replacement for free which we’re now sending that one back too. Amazon is paying all costs to get it back to them for a full refund to us. The first table we were told to field destroy. I’m going to take the playing surface out to fashion a bar in the game room.
A short time after receiving his brand new McClure Patriot table, Kevin reached out with another email to express his love and satisfaction with the shuffleboard table he received. He no longer had any issues as we met his needs, it complimented the room he placed it in, and most importantly, it played just the way he wanted it to. An experience we believe every customer should experience when purchasing a shuffleboard table and what we strive for.
I cannot express enough how much we LOVE our Patriot table. I like the Mocha too, it seems to be a nice contrast to the room. We are 100% satisfied with your service and table. Love how this table plays the way a Shuffleboard Table should. This is our first ‘real’ table experience. Love the slight (20lb paper thick) concave structure, no need for any adjustments.
