Based on standard sizes, realistic end clearance, and real-world home use.
Side clearance is usually less critical than end clearance because a shuffleboard table can often sit close to one wall. In many homes, 2.5ft at each end is a solid, usable planning standard, while 3ft gives a roomier setup.
Recommendation
We’ll give one primary standard-size recommendation whenever possible, then only mention a custom off-size table if it would meaningfully improve the fit.

This note only appears for smaller rooms where a custom 10ft or 11ft table may make sense between the standard 9ft and 12ft options.
Standard sizes that exceed the room are summarized here to keep the answer quick and easy to scan.
Shuffleboard tables need open space at both ends so players can stand and shoot comfortably. A common rule is 2.5ft to 3ft of clearance on each end, which means adding 5ft to 6ft to the table length when planning your room.
For normal home play, 2.5ft of end clearance is often enough. Players usually step to the side between shots, and spectators tend to gather around the room rather than standing directly behind the table the entire time. A full 3ft at each end simply gives more extra room.
In most rooms, side clearance matters less. A table can often sit close to one wall, so width planning is more about cabinet width and whether you want a walkway beside the table.
Room fit is only part of planning. A table may fit the room but still be difficult to move into place.
