Designing a Large Entertainment Space with Shuffleboard and Pool Tables

Some game rooms are designed as a small corner of a basement. Others are designed as large entertainment spaces where shuffleboard, billiards, and arcade games create a full social environment. This project converted an industrial-style building into a large private game room featuring a handcrafted shuffleboard table as the centerpiece

Over the years we have installed shuffleboard tables in everything from small basements to large purpose-built entertainment spaces.

Planning the Layout of a Large Game Room

When planning a large gameroom or adding a shuffleboard table to your space. These photos show some game room ideas from our clients that may help with planning. For many, the shuffleboard is the only piece in the game room or the centerpiece, complemented by other games like Pool Tables, foosball, or arcade games. We hope these ideas inspire you when designing your own gameroom or space for a shuffleboard table. Review our guide if you need help determining how much space a shuffleboard table needs

Shuffleboard as a Centerpiece Game

Many customers construct a room addition or building on their property specifically for their shuffleboard table. These spaces often become focal points for gatherings, conversations, and entertainment. Typically, they include a small kitchen or bar area, and many customers also add a dining table. This setup allows the shuffleboard table to serve two purposes: as a game for playing and as a buffet serving table during large parties.

Combining Multiple Games in One Room

When planning a complete entertainment area, it's essential to carefully consider the placement of the shuffleboard table in relation to other games. For instance, a pool table requires 5 feet of clearance around all four sides. A ping pong table also needs significant space at both ends for players to move freely. In contrast, foosball tables require less room, needing only side clearance. Arcade games can be placed against a wall, needing only enough space to stand behind them. The shuffleboard table can be positioned against one wall, with 2.5 to 3 feet of clearance on each end for players. However, it’s important to also consider the space needed for the pool table and other games in the area.

Lighting and Architecture

In large entertainment spaces, architectural features often define the room's character as much as the furniture itself. Pendant lights suspended over the shuffleboard table create a strong visual line that anchors the game area, while exposed brick walls and open structural ceilings emphasize the building’s industrial heritage. The generous ceiling height allows the long proportions of a shuffleboard table to feel intentional rather than imposing. When these elements are combined ~ natural materials, architectural lighting, and open space, they create a cohesive industrial aesthetic that many designers seek when planning modern game rooms and social spaces.

Contemporary Game Room Design

Not all game rooms follow a rustic or industrial theme. In many modern homes, designers choose clean architectural lines, neutral palettes, and large open windows that bring natural light into the space. In these settings, the shuffleboard table becomes part of the overall architectural composition rather than a traditional recreation piece.

Contemporary game rooms often feature wide plank hardwood floors, minimal wall treatments, and modern lighting. Large windows or sliding glass doors help connect the entertainment space to outdoor views, while recessed lighting and artwork create a gallery-like atmosphere around the tables.

In projects like these, designers frequently coordinate the shuffleboard table with other games in the room. Some clients commission a shuffleboard to complement a custom pool table, creating a cohesive look across the entire entertainment area. The result is a modern social space where furniture, architecture, and recreation pieces all work together as part of the interior design.

Mitchell Custom Pool Tables created several distinctive cantilever designs and is no longer producing new tables. When clients who originally contacted us to build a shuffleboard table to match their Mitchell pool table later asked if we could recreate the cantilever design, we agreed to produce a small number of custom tables for those projects.

Custom Game Tables for Unique Design Projects

Occasionally, we are asked to build pieces that fall outside our normal work. Most billiard tables are manufactured by companies that specialize exclusively in pool tables, and many of those manufacturers offer designs that coordinate well with our shuffleboard tables. Because of that, we generally focus our efforts on building shuffleboard tables rather than producing full billiard tables.

However, from time to time, a project comes along that is unique enough for us to consider. In this case, a client owned a custom cantilever-style pool table originally produced by Mitchell Custom Pool Tables. When that company stopped accepting new orders, the client asked if we could create additional pieces that matched the design language of the room.

The result was a small run of highly specialized tables built around the same sculptural cantilever base and modern architectural form. Projects like this require extensive engineering, material sourcing, and machining work, which is why they are rare and produced only for very specific design situations.

While our primary focus remains on handcrafted shuffleboard tables, we occasionally collaborate with designers or clients who need a custom game table built to match a distinctive interior concept.

Automotive Garage Game Rooms and Collector Spaces

Game rooms are not always located inside a traditional living space. Many collectors and hobbyists create entertainment areas inside large garages, workshops, or vehicle showrooms where friends gather to talk cars, watch races, and relax between projects. In these environments, a shuffleboard table often becomes the centerpiece of the room.

Automotive-themed spaces frequently feature polished concrete or modular garage flooring, neon signs, racing memorabilia, and vintage scoreboards. A shuffleboard table fits naturally into this setting because it adds a social activity without competing with the vehicles or mechanical workspace.

Long walls inside garages or collector buildings are ideal for shuffleboard installations. The table can run along the side of the room while leaving open space for vehicles, seating areas, or workshop access. In many cases, the shuffleboard table becomes a gathering point where guests can play a quick game while watching sports or discussing the latest automotive project.

Lodge Style Game Rooms and Trophy Rooms

In lodge-style homes, hunting cabins, or mountain retreats, the game room often becomes a central gathering space where family and guests relax after a day outdoors. These rooms frequently feature natural materials such as reclaimed wood, wide-plank flooring, and textured wall panels, creating a warm, rustic atmosphere.

A shuffleboard table fits naturally in these environments because its length complements the scale of large lodge rooms. Exposed beams, mounted trophies, and oversized televisions often define the space's architecture, while the shuffleboard table provides an activity that encourages conversation and friendly competition.

Many lodge-style game rooms are designed so the shuffleboard table runs along a focal wall beneath a television or between architectural features. This layout allows guests to watch sports or socialize while playing, making the shuffleboard table both a functional game and a natural centerpiece within the room

Every game room is different, and the best designs often come from seeing how real spaces are planned and used. The examples above highlight several architectural styles, from modern homes and collector garages to lodge-style entertainment rooms.
