• Low Pile & Berber: This tight, flat weave is ideal. It offers minimal compression, meaning your table will settle very little after the initial setup.
• Medium Pile: Standard residential carpeting allows for a small amount of sinking. Leg levelers or shims will easily absorb this minor movement.
• Plush & Shag Carpet: On thicker carpet and padding, the table may settle slightly during the first few weeks. If it does, a minor leveling adjustment is usually all that's needed.

Carpet is usually not an issue for shuffleboard play. A shuffleboard puck glides smoothly across a traditionally finished playboard because the playboard is securely positioned inside a heavy wood cabinet. As long as the cabinet legs are adjusted to keep the cabinet level, the carpet underneath won't affect the puck's slide.

It's a common misconception that a shuffleboard table must be perfectly flat. In reality, a properly adjusted shuffleboard table has a slight sway, with the playboard being concave at both ends. For tables 14 feet or longer, the ends should be slightly elevated. For 9- or 12-foot tables with only two legs, you would adjust the level from end to end. 

The side-to-side leveling is more critical; when you toss a puck down the center of the board, it should remain centered. However, climate adjusters are designed not to make the board perfectly flat, but rather to create a slight concave shape at the ends, allowing the pucks to curve in slightly.

The way a table meets the floor dictates how you manage its stability. This structural design determines your leveling strategy:

• Adjustable Leg Levelers: Many modern tables feature threaded metal feet. These allow you to rotate each foot individually to raise or lower a specific corner, compensating for uneven spots in the floor or carpet.
• Pedestal and Solid Wood Bases: Premium, traditional designs feature massive wood legs or full pedestal bases. These distribute the immense weight of the table evenly across a wider surface area.
• Why Pedestal Bases Require Shims: Because solid wood blocks do not use mechanical screws, they rely on custom flat wood shims placed discretely underneath the base to achieve a microscopic balance.
• Why Shims Need Adjustment Later: As the heavy wood base compresses the carpet fibers during the first month, a shim may slightly compress into the padding, requiring a minor tweak to maintain a true roll.
• Careful consideration of the weight of the table may require one or more people to help move one end of the table or from side to side to allow another person to safely place flat shims between the legs and the carpet for adjustment

• Seasonal Humidity: High summer humidity causes wood floors to swell, while dry winter air causes them to shrink.
• Upstairs Wood Floors: Second-story subfloors naturally flex under weight more than a rigid basement slab.
